Change to the Bourne academy

On the 1st September 2010 Kings High became The Bourne Academy which still operates out of the old Kings High site, which was renovated. Amongst the changes made during the change, multiple doors were painted pink, along with new tables and chairs and various other smaller changes. The school is also funded by Canford School. The new Head Mistress Is Mrs Jackie Steel took over In september 2010.

Performing arts

Kings High was a specialist school in performing arts but the Bourne Academy specialises in English and Engineering.

BSF and The Future

Kings High is undergoing a government funded revival of schools all around the country. This is called BSF (Building Schools for the Future). The nominated BSF Team from Kings High are attending conferences in Bournemouth and London along with other schools around Bournemouth. The Kings High school building is pre World War II. Although the school has recently built a new science block, design and technology block and a new canteen and dance studio, the future project will be built up from around these buildings.

The Hub

The Hub is a dining area/performing studio where food is served, dance is practiced and drama performances and other special events often take place. The Hub was renovated in 2010 along with other sections of the school.

History

The school was built in 1937 as East Howe Senior School for boys and girls. The original East Howe School was built in 1912 by Dorset County Council when the area was rural. The school was brought under the control of Bournemouth Local Education Authority in 1931 when Bournemouth extended its boundaries to include the area. The school grew rapidly and the seniors moved to their new building along Hadow Road (supposedly named after Henry Hadow of the Hadow Report of 1926). During World War II, the school was utilized as a hospital. The original 1912 school is now used as a youth centre.

In 1969 the boys' and girls' schools merged to become Kingsleigh Secondary School, along with the local infant school and junior school. A number of buildings were added to the school until it was put in special measures in 2000 and renamed Kings High School. The school was led by Mr Gareth Jones who turned the school around from a bad to an excellent school, he was promoted to run several schools in London and awarded an MBE in 2006. Kings High School was led by Alyn Fendley up until 2010, the year the school was renovated and deemed 'The Bourne Academy'. However Kings High School lives on in the hearts of the pupils with memories of that time before the school received the new moniker, which sounds like a prequel of the Jason Bourne series starring Matt Damon.
